Ramsey Website Redesign
Purpose
Consider enhancing the City's website by remodeling the site, consolidating existing services, and offering
additional services.
Current Website
The City of Ramsey website, in its current form, came to be through the efforts of City staff migrating data
from a former hosting/management company. The move was prompted by communication issues with the
hosting company. Updates to the website would take hours, even days to get done by the hosted company.
After the City and this particular hosting company had gone their separate ways, City IT and Administrative staff,
with the help of a local Ramsey programmer, were able to build the website from scratch using Drupal version 6.
This data was then migrated to a server located at the Logis facility in Golden Valley. This setup would allow City
staff to log in and update the site remotely. That was four years ago, and even before the move, the site has
remained largely unchanged.
Functionally, the City's current website is limited to little more than a reference center. Citizens are able to
search documents and information online, and view online pictures and videos. However, the City does utilize
some third party services to enhance our citizens' online experience. Citizens can subscribe to mass email lists
for items such as job opportunities and city meetings, view online meeting minutes and agendas, view park
calendars, take City surveys, and submit job applications with the help of these external services.
The City currently does not pay for maintenance or hosting of the City website, but rather, the site is hosted
as a perk of being a Logis customer. The software is also free of any recurring costs, but is now two major
versions out of date. The only costs are currently associated with online third party services. See costs below.
• Mass Email Communications-$3,650/year
• Human Resources Online Application Software-$3,000/year
• Agenda and Minutes Software-$3,500
• Online Survey Service(two departments) -$400/year
• Online Photo Galleries-$80/year
There are several limitations with the current site. The most prominent limitation of the website is that
we're not able to update the software. This prevents any new features from being added as well as patches for
security and functionality. Other frustrations have come in from citizens siting difficulty locating information via
the search function, difficulty viewing the website/using features on a mobile phone or tablet, and being unable
to submit PDF forms online.
New Website
There are many different options when it comes to selecting a new website. There are the inexpensive
do-it-yourself packages, all the way up to an all-inclusive hosted solution. Considering both the frustrations of
the current site as well as the desired features of a website, the IT department has researched many different
1
