2. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

PUBLIC
TRANSPORTATION
a. Inventory

As the price of fossil fuel increases, the issue of
personal mobility becomes more and more complex. For a
City, the presence of public transportation offers a
potential response to the fsue. Since Ramsey does not
have, nor are there any plans to provide bus service,
other local options should be discussed which might be
appropriate for Ramsey.

Bus Service=

The Netropolitan Transit Commission (HTC) has established
service areas and taxing districts for the Twin Cities
region. The urbanized portion of Ramsey lies within the
~.'~ ~
?th service area, and outside of the transit taxing "
district. This means that Ramsey pays only !~!0 the ~
amount that other communities do, or .125 $11es for 1980. '
There is currently no }iTC bus service into the City of
Ramsey, although several routes are available in nearby
Anoka.

Paratransit:

As alternatives to the single passenger automobile and
the bus, there are a range of transportation modes falling
under the umbrella term "Paratransit". This included
everything between the single passenger automobile on
one extreme, and the fixed-route transit bus on the other,
i.e. carpools, vanpools, dial-a-ride services, buses which
will detour from their main routes for an extra charge,
and "taxi's which will pick up and discharge passengers
anywhere along one route for a fixed fee. ·

The MTC encourages one form of paratransit - ridesharing
(car-and vanpooling) by offering various programs and
assistance to those interested. Rtdesharing services
offered to Ramsey by the MTC are as follows:

The MTC will:

1)

Send callers the names and phone numbers of interested
carpoolers from their area.

2)

Offer vans and free newspaper advertising space to
find riders.

Give on-site company assistance in setting up car--
and-vanpool programs.

Park n' Ridge Facilities:

Cities can encourage car-and vanpooling and use of public
transit by providing places where individual drivers may

69 7-6-81
9-14-81
