Strategies to Improve Communities <br />leave items from their home or yard curbside for <br />pick-up free of charge — eliminating waste that <br />might have accumulated over several weeks or <br />months. <br />Evaluate: In February 2012, Cartersville <br />successfully launched its first recycling program. <br />Residents signing up to receive the service exceeded <br />the City's original estimate of 2,000 households. <br />Approval rating <br />Comparison to Benchmark <br />2013 <br />83% <br />Above <br />2011 <br />50% <br />Much below <br />As a follow-up, the City included additional <br />questions about the program in its 2013 <br />administration of The National Citizen Survey. <br />Quality of recycling services went from "much <br />below" both the national and southeast United <br />States benchmarks to "above" the benchmark in each <br />area. Sixty-three percent of Cartersville residents <br />indicated that they had recycled at least once in the <br />past twelve months. <br />In the following chapters, each of the six Es is <br />further defined and is accompanied by case studies <br />of local governments that have used survey results <br />from their residents to help strengthen their <br />communities.
