Why you need to provide tt--a portion of the points awarded for need wtll be awarded on the
basis of service area population and the way the proposed project appears to serve the
various age groups tn that service area, Failure to include this Information will result in
n_~opolnts being a,arded for these aspects of need. ' ..~'
'Items to remember:

a. The figures must refer to the service area of the proposed project. Ideal~y, the service
'areas of pro]~-(s are as follows: : -' "~ ' : .... "'

Neighborhood Park/Playground .......... 1/4 to 1/2 mile radius
Con~nunlty Park/Playfield .............. 1 to 1-1/2 mile radius
· Co~r~untty Special Use Facility ........ 1 to 1-1/2 mile radius '
Local Trail Corridor .................. 1/4 to 1/g mile either side of trail

However, local conditions may mean the service area of a given facility is larger or
smaller than the standard given here. The important point t.s that the population figures
should refer to the population that will be,served bY the proJect~ not the population of
the whole city or town. ' .

b. The age breakdown is based on U.S. Census age tabulations. Ideally, your Information
should also be tabulated this way. However, it is the general groupings, that are lmpor-
, tent (pre-teens, teens, etc.). If Xour data varies by a couple of xears either way, this
is not a problem. ., ~ ,.

4. Age data by census tract is available from the 1980 Census. You may be able to get this
information from your city planning department. It will be up to the applicant to combine
the data from census tracts so as to best reflect the service area of a particular park. To
receive tract data from the Council call Charles Smith at 291-6522 and provide the following
information:

a. The location of the park (a street address would be ideal).

b. The classification of the park, according to section 3.a. above.

In order to ease the burden of providing this information and to make it as useful to you as
possibleo please contact the Council for tract data as early in the application proces's as
you can. If ~u use data other than from the 1980 Census~ e.g,, more recent co~nuntty esti-
mates, ple)~ n~te:a~d' teli'd~ Why; .... -- ~ ......
