I
ii
I
I
I
!
I
I
i
I
I
I
i
I
I
I
I
I

TO:

FROM:

DATE:

RE:

MEMO
City Council & Park Comission
Peter R. Raatikka
January 16, 1984
Central Park Irrigation

At the January 10, 1984 council meeting, the City Council asked that the Park
Comission review the priorities in regard to the development of Central Park.
Some of the council members thought that maybe the irrigation should be delayed
and the football and soccer fields and lighting be given a higher priority.
The council also asked me to review the possibility of reducing the well size
to lower the cost of the irrigation system.

Therefore, I have reviewed the cost savings by providing a 300 gallon per
minute (GPM) well versus a 550 GPM well as previously bid. The estimated
savings would be approximately $20,000.00 which would reduce the total
construction cost of the irrigation system to $72,000.00.

A 300 GPM well could provide an inch (l") of water over the 34 acres proposed
for irrigation in a period of 52 hours. The proposed 550 GPM well would have
provided one and one half inches (1-1/2") of water over the 34 acres in 40
hours. This would have allowed for operation of the system eight hours per day
and five days per week.

The 300 GPM well would be capable of providing one and one-half inches per
week if it was operated 72 hours each week. At the time of total
development, another well could be added. However, prior to complete
development of Central Park, the well could provide adequate water during the
normal proposed operating time between ll:O0 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.

Another temporary solution, as previously discussed, would be to acquire water
from A1Sorteberg's well. An underground piping system from the well to the
park could cost as much as $25,000.00.
