I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

Possible Types of Housing

Housing needs vary greatly among Twin Cities eon~nunittes. However, most
housing already in the suburbs is single-family detached homes. Today, other
types of housing could be butlt that are more likely to be affordable.

Attached housing for young families, including duplexes, quadhomes, townhomes,
condominiums and cooperatives, could be produced in a wide price range to serve
low- and moderate-income families.

Attractive manufactured housing developments could be offered in small rental
parks or subdivisions.

Affordable rental units for all income groups are in short supply in many
suburbs. Both market-rate and rent-assisted units could be developed.

Attached housing for mature families ("empty nesters") could be built with
emphasis on low individual maintenance needs. Providing such housing could
free up single-family homes for younger families.

Accessory housing could be encouraged. Homes could be remodeled to include a
small accessory apartment for an elderly parent or working son or daughter, or
to provide rental income to help with large mortgage payments or high energy
bills.

Housing rehabilitation could be encouraged among homeowners and landlords.
This may be a major need in some of the older suburbs.

What's Next?

Fundraising for the MHF will begin the second half of 1984. The initial goal
is $5 million in contributions from foundations and corporations. When
sufficient funds have been raised, the MHF will begin accepting proposals from
communities and counties for homeownership or rental housing programs, in
accordance with adopted MHF guidelines. This could begin as early as Spring,
1985, if fundraising efforts are successful.

LSB78A
