It was the consensus of the Public Works Committee that this is a problem that needs to be
corrected for safety reasons.
Motion by Councilmember Johns, seconded by Councilmember Kuzma, to recommend the City
Council accept the proposed plan.
Motion carried. Voting Yes: Chairperson Riley, Councilmembers Johns and Kuzma. Voting
No: None. Absent: Councilmember Shryock.
6. COMMITTEE / STAFF INPUT
6.01: Staff Updates on Improvement Projects and Items of Interest
Public Works Superintendent Riemer stated Tuesday there was a water main break in a location
where a storm sewer was running on top of it; however, they worked hard and fast and got it
fixed and running again soon after.
Chairperson Riley asked if the issue was old pipes.
Public Works Superintendent Riemer stated the age of the pipes could have played a part in the
break but they also suspect the pipe could have been pierced by a fork during construction at
some point.
City Engineer Westby noted the pipes aren't really old and he wouldn't expect many breaks in
the near future as these pipes are typically good for 80 - 100 years so they should all last awhile.
City Engineer Westby stated the Armstrong pavement relay project started October 3, 2016 and
they anticipate it being finished close to the end of October.
City Engineer Westby stated the Business Park 95 stormwater pond improvements should be
done by the end of the month as well.
City Engineer Westby stated the Andrie Street project is currently underway but was delayed due
to the rain. He stated the contract stated the project was to be completed by September 30, 2016
but has been extended. He noted they will discuss upon completion whether or not there should
be any liquidated damages as a result of the extended completion date. He stated they plan to
have Phase 3 completed by the end of October.
Councilmember Kuzma stated on Alpine Drive, there is a dip where they completed Phase 1 of
the Andrie Street project and he is concerned that if it is not corrected, it will just cause damage
again sooner than later.
City Engineer Westby replied that issue should be corrected when they finish the project.
City Engineer Westby announced the Jarvis Street Railroad Crossing Quiet Zone goes into effect
on October 31, 2016.
Public Works Committee/ October 18, 2016
