Your interest in such a system was prompted by the
m proximity of your home to the Anoka Municipal Sanitary Landfill (Landfill).
As you know, recent sampling of your well by Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
{MPCA) staff indicates that your well has not been affected by the Landfill.
The results of this sampling were forwarded to you in a December 10, 1985 letter
m from staff.
my

Currently, numerous home filtration systems are available from various
m manufacturers. The capabilities of these systems are likely to vary signifi-
·
cantly due to differences in' size, design, maintenance schedules and filter
materials. Some manufacturers have test data available which indicate the
m efficiency of their system in reducing or removing specific compounds under
controlled laboratory conditions.

I
I
I

Unfortunately, these laboratory data may not be sufficient to evaluate if a
system is appropriate for use on a well, such as yours, which is near a waste
disposal facility. A landfill can potentially release a wide variety of corn-
.pounds to ground water. A filtration system which can effectively remove one
type or. category of compounds may not effectively remove another type and thus
may not be appropriate for use near a landfill. Even if a manufacturer demon-
strates .that a system removes all compounds which have been released by a given
landfill,' it is possible in the future the landfill will release compounds which
cannot ~removed by the system.

m
m

A critical issue in the use of any filtration system is the maintenance of the
system. Filtration systems have a finite ability to capture contaminants. Once
the filter's capacity is reached contaminants pass through the system and enter
the residential water supply. This may occur without the homeowner noticing it
as many contaminants cannot be detected by smell or taste at low concentrations.

m

Phone:
1935 West County Road B2.
