I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
i
I
I
I
I
!
I
I

Mrs, Susan Beale
Page Two

Unfortunately, many contaminants may be harmful to human health at concentrations
which are too low to be detected by smell or taste. For this reason it is very
important that filtration systems are regularly maintained and their effluent
sampled in order to assure their performance. However, it may be difficult to
predict the necessary maintenance schedule for a system which filters ground
water near a waste disposal site. lhts is because ground water quality may
change with time and thus shorten the effective life of the filter.

As I hope is clear, the selection, installation and maintenance of a home
filtration system is not a simple proposition. MPCA staff believe that con-
tinued monitoring instead of a filtration system is appropriate for residential
monitoring wells which are not contaminated.

For further information on home filteration systems you may wish to obtain a
publication from the Freshwater Society titled 'Water Filters, Their Effect on
Water Quality."
