Hutchison

SUBJECT: Anoka Landfill; Report on Leachate Migration

Waste Management of Minnesota, Inc., dba Anoka Landfill, was required, as a
condition of licensure, to submit a report to the County assessing the extent
of leachate migration and a deep aquifer monitoring plan.

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

Th~ licensee has submitted the required report. This report indicates the
following:

1. There is definite ground water gradient to the south east.

2. There may be a slight downward gradient in the northwest portion of the
site but this disappears in the southeast portion of the site.

3. There are two leachate plumes leaving the fill. One plume originates on
the east side of the landfill and seems to be moving in a southeast
direction. The other plume originates at the southwest corner of the land-
fill and seems to be moving south and then shifting to a southeasterly
migration.

4. The leachate plumes appear to be moving toward and along the surface of
the till.

5. The leachate plumes do not appear to have left the landfill site.

6. The concentration of the contaminants is at a relatively low level.

7. Some additional wells will be constructed in early 1986 and sampled to
more precisely deliniate the depth and horizontal extent of the leachate
plumes.

Review of the report by staff and the County's consultant has identified several
questions which need to be discussed with the licensee. A staff recommendation
concerning this report will be presented at the Committees February meeting.

I
I

Affirmative Action / Equal Opportunity Employer
