The area in question involves approximately 20-25 homes
on 159th Lane and 161st Street between Variolite and County Road 83.

In response to a concern raised by a well driller we reviewed water test
data and well log data for this area. The well log data (8 wells) indicates
that the wells are deep wells 70 to 80 feet in depth. The water test data
(4 wells) indicates the presence of elevated nitrates ranging from 3.5 to
27 milligrams per liter.

These findings are of concern because natural soil mineral deposits of nitrate
are not known to exist in this portion of the state. We would not expect to
find nitrate present in a water supply in more than a trace amount (less than
1 milligram per liter). When nitrate is found in more than a trace amount in
this area it is most likely the result of impacts by on-site sewage systems
and/or the rapids infiltration of surface water. These sources of nitrate
are significant because of the many other contaminants associated with them
which may be hazardous and for which testing is not possible or practical.

Although this situation is not related to the landfill we feel that it should
be investigated further. We will be calling on these residents in the next
couple of weeks to obtain additional well construction information and samples.
We will keep you informed as to any further findings in this matter.

If you have any questions concerning this matter, please call on me.
/~~~~Since. r. ely,' . .
Robert M.
