I
I
I
I
I
i
I
I
I

I
I
:i
i
I
I
i
I

Editor ' s Note:
This is a first in a series of articles on the Ramsey Economic
Development Commission (EDC). These articles deal with the
history, purpose, goals, projects, and concerns of the Ramsey
Economic Development Commission.

The Ramsey EDC was formed by the City Council in 1982. The
reason the City Council established the EDC was to further the
econc~ic develounent of Ramsey, to assist and prcmote the growth
and expansion of business and industrial concerns, including
small businesses, in the City. It was the Council's intention
that an EDC would contribute to the economic well-being of the
City by expanding business opportunities within the City. This
would, in turn, increase ~mployment opportunities, payroll, and
expand the tax base within Ramsey.

The current EDC is made up of 9 mambers who volunteer their time
and experience to act as an advisory source to the City Council.
The Commission often reviews state legislation and local
ordinances in order to determine these regulations' impact on our
local development. The Commission also deals with exploring
conventional and alternative methods of financing for commercial
and industrial development. The Commission also meets with state
legislators, local developers and businessmen to discuss their
concerns and the impact of current issues on Ramsey's economic
climate, as well as how that climate can be improved.

The Commission understands the importance of econcmic develo~ent
within Ramsey. With the expansion of city roads, parks and
police protection, it becomes more costly for the taxpayer to
support these needed services. Since businesses proportionately
pay the higher tax rate, it becomes more and more important as
the City grows to promote the growth of new businesses and the
expansion of existing businesses in our Cit~/.

The goal of the Ramsey Economic Development Commission is to
insure the orderly development of the City's commercial and
industrial areas and still preserve the quality of life we enjoy
in Ramsey.
