Ramon Burton
July 12, 1985
Page 4

co-disosal application forms along wit)) our laboratory report should be
forwarded to Ms. Lisa lhrovig at the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
If acceptable, the MPCA will then issue a permit for Waltek, Inc. to
dispose of these three wastestreams at the sanitary landfill. Elevated
concentrations of iron in both the wheelabrator and grinding dust and
chromium in the grinding dust may pose potential problems for approval.
However, the volume for both of these wastestreams is small, which will
hopefully be taken into consideration in the MPCA's review for approval.

Oil Waste - It is our recommendation that your oil waste be disposed of
through a registered NPCA transporter such as Bert's Oil. Sometime in
the near future new regulations will be promulgated by EPA/MPCA regarding
control of waste oil as a hazardous waste. When these regulations are
promulgated the management procedures for the waste oil will Probably
)lave to be changed.

~aste Water Profile
.,
Currently Waltek, Inc. discharges its wastewater streams to a drain field
located adjacent to the facility. As a preliminary step to assess
potential impact of this discharge to the soil and groundwater in the
area representative samples of t~e wastewater discharge from Waltek, Inc.
~ere collected by PACE Laboratories, Inc. and analyzed for all suspected
contaminants related to Waltek, Inc. manufacturing processes. A
composite wastewater sample was collected by PACE Laboratories, Inc.
This sample was obtained by collecting grab samples from the Set Up
~astewater stream, shell room rinsewater and rinsewater from the parts
tank. Our report of laboratory analyses for the shell rinse set up
composite is attached for your review. It is estimated by Waltek, Inc.
personnel that the combined industrial wastewater discharge to the drain
field 'is approximately 2500 to 30L)O gallons per year.

I~dsed upon our analysis it appears that some care Should be exercised in
.~)ischargiug t~)e v~aste~ater to the drain field to assure that it is
i~roperly neuCralized before discharge. Composite v~astewater analyzed had
,~ pi( of 2.1. Caustic should be added to '~he wastewater to raise tl~e pH
iJetween 6.5 and 9.U prior to uiscilarge. Outside of corrositivity the
,) bier parameters analyzed on the was tewater showed i t to be
non-hazardous.

Additionally, comparing the metal values obtained on the wastewater
stream to the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) prima'ry and secondary
standards for metals only chromium at O.U9 rog/1 (SDt~A is 0.05 rog/l) and
iron at 1.5 rog/1 (SDWA is 0.3 rog/l) exceeded the Safe DrinKing Water Act
,~riteria. Ti~e laboratory data also si~ows trace levels of volatile

m
