I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
i
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

l, lr. Ramon Burton
July 12, 1985
Page 3

PACE Laboratories, Inc. is currently dealing with several companies in
the metal finishing and electro plating industry which are required to
install pretreat~ent equipment to treat their wastewater streams prior to
discharge in the sanitary sewer system. Several of these firms utilize
caustic in their treatment process. We are in the process of contacting
these firms to determine if sodium hydroxide slud§e could be used in
their treatment processes. To make this waste exchange concept a reality
we also need to discuss the MPCA requirements for transportation of the
sludge to a local industry and the ability of the industry to receive the
sludge as a raw product rather than a hazardous wastestream.

Packaging of the sodium hydroxide sludge would be necessary if the sludge
was sent off site to a hazardous waste disposal facility and most
probably, if the 'sludge was sent to another industry in the waste
exchange concept. However, the packa§ing would not be necessary if the
sludge were treated on-site by Waltek, Inc.

Freon Waste - Our inventory showed a total of 33 55 gallons drums
containing freon waste. The majority of these drums were 1/4 to 3/4
full. All drums were closed head 17 E steel drums. Several of these
drums would probably require repackaging prior to off-site shipment.
Attached to this report is our laboratory analysis of the freon waste.
We have also completed a Waste Research and Reclamation Spent Materials
Survey form which should be reviewed, signed and forwarded to Mr. Gene
Jameson at Waste Research & Reclamation Company along with a copy of our
laboratory report.

Itydrofluoric Acid/Nitric Acid Waste - It is our understanding that
Waltek, Inc. only generates approximately 1 55 gallon drum of this
~astestream annually. Approximatly one drum of the waste is currently
on-site. Again, the only hazardous property of this wastestream is its
currositivity (see our attached laboratory report). It is recommended
that t~is wastestream be neutralized on-site and discharged to either the
Anoka Sanitary Sewer System or your drain field. Prior to neutralization
.:nd discharge, permission will have to be obtained from'either the City
~f Anoka or the HPCA with respec~ to discharging tills wastewater stream
~o the drain field, or sewer system.

Uur report of ~aboratory analysis is attached for the shell waste,
.~rinding residue, and wheelabrator residue. Our analyses have shown
t~ese three uastestreams to be non-hazardous. As suci~, we have completed
and attaci~ed to this report the IqPCA, "Request for Co-Disposal of
lion-Hazardous Industrial Waste" forms. These forms should be reviewd by
',-taltek, Inc. and if acceptaole signed. You will also need to obtain the
;i~n.'~ur~ of the sanitary land~ill opera~or ~.~here the waste ~ould be
..;i~.~U,..~ i'~]r disposal. ,JnCe ~:~l~_,,},.-~ ~ignatures i~ave bee~ obt. ained ~i~e
