Program Description <br /> The Nationally Significant Freight and Highway Projects (NSFHP)program, as established <br /> by the Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act(FAST Act), Pub. L. 114-94, section 1105 <br /> (23 U.S.C. 117), will provide Federal financial assistance to freight and highway projects of <br /> national or regional significance. The Department will also refer to NSFHP grants as Fostering <br /> Advancements in Shipping and Transportation for the Long-term Achievement of National <br /> Efficiencies (FASTLANE) grants. The FASTLANE program provides dedicated, discretionary <br /> funding for projects that address critical freight issues facing our nation's highways and bridges. <br /> and for the first time in the U.S. Department of Transportation's 50-year history, establishes <br /> broad, multiyear eligibilities for freight infrastructure. <br /> To better adapt to national and regional population growth, compete in the global <br /> economy, and meet the needs of consumers and industry, the United States needs a strong <br /> multimodal transportation system.
