PR CASE: /

REVIEW POLICY ON PETS IN PARKS
By: Leonard Linton, Civil Engineer

Background:

The City Council and Parks Commissioners have received a request fi.om concerned citizens to
review the policy on pets in the parks. The concerns include control of the animals by their
owners and cleaning up the waste. The City of Andover was listed as an example ora
community of a policy that could be emulated in the City or Ramsey.

Staff has reviewed the Andover ordinance. Staff has also reviewed the Ramsey ordinances
regarding pets. Both are attached for your revieW.. Our ordinances have a provision for pets on a
maximum leash, of 8 feet and for owners to clean up the waste.

Andover has taken the position of specifically excluding animals fi~om Sunshine Park and City
Hall Park Complex #1.

This problem of not picking up animal waste has been reported on the trails also.

Recommendation:

Staff recommends a program to educate the public regarding the existing pol/cy. Tt3/s could take
the form of reminders in the City Newsletter, putting a notice on the city website, putting a
reminder in the RYAA newsletter (if there is one) and posting signs in the parks and at
trailheads.

Action:

Motion to recommend action based on discussion,

Reviewed By:

Public Works Director
Assistant Public Works Director

PR: 08/12/04
