, <br /> <br /> Scheduled for November 18, 19, <br />and 20 at the Downtown Holiday <br />inn, Minneapolis, is the first in a <br />series of workshops on earth <br />shelters, sponsored by the Under- <br />ground Space Center of the <br />University of Minnesota. Sub- <br />sequent conferences in the series <br />will be held in Minneapolis and <br />other U.S. cities. <br /> The purpose of the November <br />conference is to introduce the <br />state-of-the-art of large-scale <br />earth-sheltered design and con- <br />struction with a focus on such <br />non-residential projects as public <br />bui]dings, schools, libraries, shop- <br /> <br />Earth Sheller Series to Begin <br /> <br />ping facilities, commercial storage, <br />and offices. Presentations will <br />include research reviews and <br />interpretations, as well as descrip- <br />tions and assessments of a wide <br />variety of projects from around the <br />country. An optional Sunday even- <br />ing presentation will be general <br />and introductory; Monday and <br />Tuesday sessions will be technical. <br />There will be opportunities to tour <br />earth-sheltered buildings. <br /> The University Underground <br />Space Center was created, as a <br />research and information center <br />on underground construction. The <br />Center incorporates the disciplines <br /> <br />of civil, mineral, and mechanical <br />engineering, investigating not only <br />earth-sheltered houses but a varie- <br />ty of uses including deep storage <br />facilities, laboratories, libraries, and <br />zoos. Publications on the study of <br />underground space may be or- <br />dered through the Center.
