I
I
I
!
!
I

I
!
I
I
I
I
I

B. AIRPORTS

This section provides information about airport facilities which affect your community
and is based on the Airports chapter of the Metropolitan Development Guide adopted
by the Metropolitan Council in 1973 and on information provided by the Minnesota
Department of Aeronautics. The existing Airports chapter contains a plan for a
system of airports in the metropolitan area, but due to recent changes in air travel
demand and airport needs, the chapter will be revised during 1977. When a new
Airports chapter is adopted by the Metropolitan Council3information about the planned
airport system that affects Ramsey will be sent to you. If the irformation
is forwarded to you before January 1, 1978, it must be reflected in your comprehensive
plan, as stipulated in Section 6 of the Land Planning Act. ~

Facilities

North Search Area for Future 1V[ajor Airport (Planned)

Character

This airport would be an air carrier airport to be located
in a property of approximately 23,000 acres, of which
11,000 acres would be ultimately developed and used for
operational purposes. The ultimate layout would include
four runways in the mainwind direction and two crosswind
runways. Precision instrument approaches would be pro-
vided. A general aviation runway would be available during
the initial phase of development. This runway would be
designed to allow construction of STOL (short takeoff and
landing) runways at a later day.

Location
Function
Capacity

The major airport search area is bounded generally by
Highway 65 on the east, a line below Lake George on the
north, Highway 47 and the Rum River on the west, and
a line approximately level with Round Lake on the south.
This search area encompasses portions of Andover, Ham
Lake, Oak Grove, Bums, Ramsey, and East Bethel (1Vlap B 2).

This facility is intended to replace Wold-Chamberlain Field
as the air carrier airport at that time when Wold will have
reached capacity in terms of air operations, ground and
terminal facilities, or environmental compatibility. The
service area for the new airport would include all of the
seven-county metropolitan area.

The planned configuration of this airport would provide a
practical annual capacity of about one million operations.

MAY $ 977

14
