7. Offices of the County. Use the offices of the County to concert with
municipalities and organizations in the immediate area to influence
regional transportation decisions with particular regard to rail
traffic, expressway development and mass transportation facilities.

8. ~pacing of Major Arterials. The importance of spacing major arterials
in the proposed plan is two-fold:

a. It dictates the total framework of future development of both
land and local circulatory systems.

The ultimate highway system represents the most efficient and
economical means of accommodating movement when spacing is
soundly determined.

Proper spacing depends largely on the type of land use and the inten-
sity of development. The arterial system in the rural areas was
developed on a $ to 6 mile grid while the arterial grid in contiguous
urbanized areas was 1/2 to 1 mile.

9. Compatibility of County System. The thoroughfare plan recognizes the
importance of the two central cities which is reflected, for example,
in the home-to-work movement between the suburbs and the CBD's of
those cities. The plan also embodies the practical principle that
the County system must be compatible with the major routes in neigh-
boring counties.

!
!

!
!

!
!

44

!
!
