cover of the trees maybe cut in these areas along <br />shoreline and some control over new developments. <br /> <br />Gerald Zimmerman stated he feels that something should be done about <br />reforestation and Ben Deemer concurred. <br /> <br />Mr. Marston replied that the State has tree removal and reforestation <br />funding and that some communities do have a program for replanting trees. <br /> <br />Administrator Schnelle added that most cities are replanting trees <br />where they have to be removed due to diseased trees, other cities are reforesting <br />their diseased tree populations through the City's general tax base just along <br />boulevards. <br /> <br />Art Dunn doesn't feel that it would be feasible to have a tree program funded <br />by the City's budget. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec noted that grants should be pursued and encouraged for tree <br />replacement~- <br /> <br />Kathleen Schneider stated that there should be a program to have trees <br />replaced on public thoroughfares where they are taken out by public improve- <br />ment projects. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec stated that the Park Commission is looking into getting grant <br />funding for planting trees in the City parks. <br /> <br />The following items were noted r.egardi~g t~eea~ <br /> <br />Something could he written into the~ark plan to identi~y~ <br />areas that trees could be planted if and when ~onie~ b%gome <br />available~, for l~nstance~ around the land~ill~ C~ty Hall~ etc~ <br /> <br />b~ That new commercial and indust~ial developments~ust replant t~ees~ <br /> <br />c. Grants pursued or investi~gated ~or private property~ <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec reported that under the present City- Code~ developers or builders <br />are to plant at least one tree on each. lot~ but it isn~'t Deing enforced. <br /> <br />Mr. Marston stated that the Cities' of Mound and Minnetrista have diseased <br />tree programs whereby they have identified a portion of the area they want to <br />get involved with on tree removal and reforestation, The mest of the community <br />is cut down on basis of individual identification. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec explained that the City of Ramsey's diseased tree program is <br />where the tree inspector goes out on~call basi's, identifies if a tree is <br />diseased~ and instructs the people to cut them down if they are diseased, <br />There is no enforcing of cutting the diseased trees~ <br /> <br />Mr, Marston asked if they feel that thins ~s an adequate program~ since unless <br />there is a removal pr.ogram~ there is no hope for removi~ng the Elm and Oak disease. <br /> <br /> WORKSHOP MEETING <br />PLANNING & ZONING <br />January ~5, 1980 <br /> Page 3 <br /> <br /> <br />
