Three New Projects
To Be Funded
By Control Data

Control Data Corporation (CDC)
has provided one-year grants to the
Underground Space Center for the fol-
lowing three projects:

· Development of a professional-
level PLATO course. The Underground
Space Center and CDC have already
developed a PLATO course on earth-
sheltered housing, intended for a gen-
eral audience (see p. 1). Now the Cen-
ter will develop technical material for a
professional-level PLATO course on
heat transfer from underground build-
ings. According to Ray Sterling, direc-
tor of the Center, the course "will help
professionals increase their understand-
lng of and abilities in specific technical
areas of the underground building
industry."
· Designing a comprehensive series
of PLATO courses on earth-sheltered/
underground space use. This grant will
enable Center staff to outline a series
of professional-level PLATO courses
covering a range of topics dealing with
earth-sheltered and underground space
use. "In this first phase of the pro-
ject,'' says Sterling, "the staff will
identify the scope of the series, deter-
mine the target groups, and plan the
content of the courses." He expects
the target groups to include architects,
engineers, local government officials,
contractors, lending industry represen-
tatives, and realtors.
· Establishing an information ser-
vice using CDC's urban data bank.
Control Data is in the process of build-
ing a comprehensive data base of tech-
nology, know-how, and information
that can be applied to solving a range
of urban problems. The Center will
contribute its expertise in the area of
earth-sheltered ahd underground tech-
nology to the data bank, which is part
of CDC's international Urban Tech-
nology Exchange service; and will use
the data bank to improve the Center's
capability to respond to enquiries.

Progress on these projects will be
covered in later issues of Underline.
Center Requests Names/Addresses of Architects, Engineers, Contractors

The Underground Space Center is
compiling a list of contractors, archi-
tects, engineers and other professionals
who have experience in underground
and/or earth-sheltered construction.
The list will become part of the Con-
trol Data Corporation's Urban Tech-
nology Exchange system (see page 3),
which is currently being used by the
Underground Space Center for referrals
and to answer requests for information
from professionals. Firms and individ-
uals interested in being added to the

list should send the following informa-
