April 14, 1980
Page Two

As you know, the University has autonomy from State government
under the Minnesota constitution. This means the Governor has
little say in the administration of the University.

While I likely share your disagreements with the views of some
University professors, I do feel that the University is an
institution where diverse opinions can and should be allowed.
One of the constitutional provisions which makes this country
a strong democracy is the protection of individual rights to
free speech and the free exchange of ideas. I am confident in
the strength of the youth of this country to listen to these
views and reject those that are contrary to the principles
established by our founding fathers.

appreciate your giving me the beneff% of your.'views.

ALBERT H.
