Gamec
Mayor - City of Ramsey
15153 Nowthen Boulevard, Northwest
Ramsey, Minnesota 55303

Dear The Honorable Thomas G. Gamec:

Thank you for your letter of sometime ago and the attached resolution. As you
are probably aware, we have tried to encourage school districts to think of the
military activities as a possible career training program. We have taken'the
position that students should be made aware of the various types of careers and
military service could well fall within this area. Not only could military
service be a life long career, but it can also serve as a training program for
students immediately out of high school. The training which they get in the
military could prepare them for a career as a civilian.

It is well to keep in mind that there are a number of people in leadership posi-
tions and with decision making authority who were young men during the very
unpopular Vietnamese war. Some of these people still possess strong anti-military
feelings due to that period of time. This tends to carry over into decisions which
they sometimes make in school systems.

If a school system determines not to establish "directory information", then they
are not in violation of state or federal law by not making educational information
available to any .agency including the military. It is also true that if they do
establish "directory information" and they make this information available to any
group, then it must be available to all groups unless specifically rejected by
the parents of a student or by a student who has reached the age of 18. We have
sent out some information to all school districts telling them how to legally
make this information available to people who are recruiting students into various
types of careers.

Thank you for your letter and the copy of your resolution. If we can be of further
help to you, please feel free to contact us.

Yours very truly,

E.
