ALBERT H. QUIE
GOVERNOR

STATE OF MINNESOTA
()l~'lVlCg Ol~ TIlI£ GOVI~IINOR

ST. PAUL

June 13, 1980

The Honorable Thomas G. Gamec
Mayor - City of Ramsey
15153 Nowthen Boulevard, Northwest
Ramsey, Minnesota 55303

Dear Honorable Thomas G. Gamec:

Thank you for your recent letter and attached resolution ~egarding Defense
Department recruiting efforts. Recently, this office sent a letter to the
superintendents of all the public schools of our state indicating the process
that they would need to follow to make it legal to release information to the
various branches of the military about the students in the public schools.
The State Department of Education has also sent material to the principals of
all of the secondary schools in the state. The 1979 Legislature passed a bill
which stated that if a school district released information about students or
allowed other recruiting agencies to come into the building to contact students,
they must also allow the same privilege to recruit personnel from the various
branches of the military.

This office believes that the information about any type of career should be
made available to students. Military service is a type of career, and the type~
of training which is available in the military, many times, makes it possible
for a person to enter a civilian career once their military service period is
terminated, This type of training can be very valuable to many people, and
especially to students in our public high schools.

Thank you for expressing your position regarding the patriotic responsibility
in making information available to the students in our schools, especially the
opportunities in the military service. We appreciate your willingness to sub-
mit the letter and issues such as the one which you have sent to this office.

GOVERNOR

AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
