StoneBrook Academy — Architectural Review
Comments from Commissioner Brauer
Tim & Patrick,
I will not be there for the meeting on June 1, so these comments probably do not matter. This is still not
there. For such a prime site in the COR, visible from the road, we want something that will attract
attention. This sketch reminds me of the old saying, "You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig."
"Think outside the box" may be the most overused phrase we have, but in this case. it fits. It also brings
up a point I made many years ago about the architecture in the COR. Every building should strive to be
an architectural award winner and if they win an award —or are even good enough to be nominated for
one —we should reward them. It is time we stopped settling for second best and good enough. Let us
take pride in our city.
FYI, just Google "daycare design" and you will see some great buildings that are boxes, but well done.
Also, GSA publishes a neat pamphlet on designing daycare centers. It is mostly about interiors, but has
some nice illustrations of what can be done. The saying in education has always been that daycare
centers should not "warehouse" kids. This is a warehouse and does not send a positive message to
potential clients or the city.
