Mayor Gamec stated that he doesn’t think the City can say this because housing styles are market
driven.
Councilmember Olson stated that she agreed and noted that the Council has had discussions
about town homes in the City and stated that this type of housing is also market driven and she
feels the market will take care of itself.
Councilmember Dehen stated that he feels the City has an obligation not to have stuff that “looks
like hell”.
Councilmember Strommen asked if the housing plan says anything about the percentage of town
homes versus single-family homes. She suggested that this be changed to more simple wording
and be tied back to the housing plan for specifics.
Assistant City Administrator Nelson stated that the old goals 6 and 7 were pulled because they
were addressed in other areas. She reviewed the Basic Operating Principles and noted that
there was a lot of discussion about renewing the faith of residents.
Councilmember Elvig stated that he doesn’t like the last bullet point about “encouraging
referendums”. He stated that he feels referendums are fine, if people want them, but doesn’t
think the City should encourage them.
Councilmember Look stated that the wording could be changed to encourage polling on key
issues during presidential elections.
City Administrator Ulrich stated that there could be non-binding types of referendums conducted
during presidential elections, for example, the question, “Do you want a community center?”
Councilmember Strommen stated that she thinks the point of this was to proactively seek
community sentiment on key issues.
Assistant City Administrator Nelson suggested the wording “encourage participation in key local
government issues, which may include a public survey.” She stated that accepting the document
from the facilitator will be on the March 11, 2008 agenda, but noted that the Council is not being
asked to adopt the document at that time.
MAYOR, COUNCIL AND STAFF INPUT
None
ADJOURNMENT
The Work Session of the City Council was adjourned at 7:31 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
City Council Work Session / March 3, 2008
Page 8 of 9
