CASE # 2

TH 47 TRAIL OPTIONS
By: Leonard Linton, Civil Engineer II

Background:

]'}~c resident at 15220 St. Francis B'lvd came to the October Public-Works Committee
meeting ant[ asked about the possibility of creating a tr~iil on the west side of TH 47 south
ot:Alpine Drive. The attached map shows the existing trails in this area. The applicable
minutes are attached. The discussion at the Public Works Committee meeting centered
on location, selection of appropriate ground cover and snow removal practices.

Observations:

-I'raffic on 47 will only increase and trails on both sides of the road will provide more
pedestrians off the shoulder as was indicated is the current situation. North of Alpine
Drive the current trail is west of the highway. It passes tt~rough a development before
coming back at 156rh Lane. Sunwood Drive would be a logical tenraination for the trail
extension as there are noise walls to the south that prevent pedestrian access. Then need
l"or exte~sion to Nowthen Boulevard may arise in the fi~ture based on the type of
development placed on the eastern portion of the Lord of Life Church Property.

Commission Action:

Co~nmission should evaluate the need ~br the trail se~'nent described and recon-unend
action to be taken by the City Council.

Motion to recommend construction of a trail west of TH 47 between Sunwood Drive and
Alpine Drive to the City Council.

Reviewed by:
Assistant Public Works DirectoffPfincipal City Engineer

1l/]8/04
