Staff would have also had to compress some of the statutory timelines as well, such as shorter candidate filing period, etc. However, staff feels its best practice to keep the timelines at the length laid out by Statutes, whenever possible. If a Special Election would have been scheduled for February 13, the Primary would have been held on December 19, 2017. The date of April 13 works best to be able abide by Statute timelines and appears to be a better time period for voters as well, by avoiding an election the week of the Christmas holiday.
