CASE #2

DISCUSS PROGRAMS FOR ENCOURAGING
VOLUNTEER PARTICIPATION IN PARKS
By: Mark Boos, Parks/Utilities Supervisor

Background:

At February's meeting, there was a fair amount of discussion on different ways to engage
residents to be involved in park maintenance and vandalism reduction. The Commission
explored two different concepts. One was that the City would have minor gift certificates
available for residents caught in the act of doing something good (picking up trash, etc.) Gift
certificates would also be available to groups like Scouts who take on a project. The other idea
was to create an annual contest or have dated medallions to encourage people to not only take
advantage of parks, but to visit different parks throughout the year.

Chairperson Cook is expected to provide additional information on Hennepin Parks' program at
the meeting.

Commission Action:

Based upon discussion.

Reviewed by:

Parks/Utilities Supervisor

Copies also distributed to:

Administrative Services Manager

PR:03/12/98
