CASE # lO

STATUS OF CONDITIONAL USE PERMITS
IN SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES
By: Zoning Administrator Sylvia Frolik

Background:

As you may recall, at your regular meeting in July I reported that I have determined that more than
200 conditional use permits have been issued in the City of Ramsey, 73 of which are currently
active. At that time, the Planning and Zoning Commission requested that surrounding
communities be surveyed regarding the same issue.

Observations:

With the assistance of Administrative Services, we conducted a telephone survey of some of the
surrounding communities regarding the issue of conditional use permits. The following is the
results of that survey: (Since the request for a survey was purely for informational purposes, I did
not ask the staff of other cities to spend a great deal of time providing me with exact numbers.)

1)

Blaine issued 60 conditional use permits in 1988, 32 in 1989, and 48 in 1990/1991
to date. Generally, conditional use permits are not revisited to determine their
activity status.

2)

Anoka estimated that they probably have 100 or more conditional use permits, the
status of which are unknown.

3)

Andover estimated that they probably have 300 conditional use permits, the status
of which are unknown.

4)

Champlin estimated that they have issued 150 conditional use permits since 1983,
the status of which are unknown.

5)

Elk River estimated that they have issued about 136 conditional use permits since
1981, probably 105 of which remain active.

Recommendation:

No action necessary; for information purposes only.

RexSew Checklist:

P&Z: 8/6/91

City Administrator
Zoning Administrator
