SPRING BUSINESS NETWORK MEETING
By: Megan Wald, Associate Planner

CASE # 3

Background:

The EDA decided it is beneficial to continue to host two Business Network Meetings per
calendar year. The spring network meeting will be scheduled for sometime in March, will be
held in the morning, and will include a catered breakfast. Staff would like to begin contacting
desired speakers to verify availability and cost. Staff hopes to secure a speaker and set a specific
date for the spring Business Network Meeting by mid January.

Observations:

Staff requested that EDA members provide ideas of keynote speakers that the City could hire for
the spring network meeting. Staff received several responses with good ideas, below is a list of
speakers the EDA may want contact to verify their availability and presentation price:

· Senator Norm Coleman
· Senator Mark Kennedy
· Tom Weaver (Metropolitan Council)
· Natalie Steffen (Metropolitan Council)
· Chairman Bell (Metropolitan Council)
· House Majority Leader Steve Sviggum
· Senate Majority Leader Dean Johnson
· Representative Jim Abeler
· Representative Kathy Tingelstad
· Charlie Weaver (former Representative - Executive Director of Minnesota Business
Partnership)
· State Demographer, Dr. Tom Gillaspy

Staff also searched the internet for possible MN keynote speakers. Attached to the case is
information staff obtained from the internet.

Recommendation:

The EDA should discuss the type of message or theme that should be portrayed at the network
meeting and then decide on who the most appropriate speaker is to convey the message. Staff
would also like the EDA to give some parameters related to the maximum cost to be expended
on a speaker.

EDA: 12.8.04
