City Engineer Olson stated that the difficulty is that every site is going to be different. <br /> <br />Councilmember Kurak stated that in a townhome development where homes are very <br />close together and they have a cul-de-sac 600 feet long and 32 feet wide, would that be <br />safe. <br /> <br />Director of Public Works/Fire Chief Kapler replied that the Fire Trucks would have no <br />problem maneuvering at a 32 foot width. He stated that he did not have any concerns <br />with the policy being recommended by staff. <br /> <br />Councihnember Zimmerman inquired if a developer could chose how wide they wanted <br />the private street. <br /> <br />City Engineer Olson replied yes, as long as they comply with the policy. <br /> <br />Councihnember Zimmerman stated that he did not think it would be good policy to have <br />a 24 foot width on a 600 foot length cul-de-sac. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec recommended sending the issue back to the Public Works Committee for <br />further discussion. <br /> <br />Councihnember Kurak stated that if the Fire Chief is not concerned, she does not see it as <br />a problem. <br /> <br />Councilmember Anderson inquired if there was any safety concerns with a 24 foot wide <br />road. <br /> <br />Councihnember Hendriksen inquired as to whom would enforce the no parking <br />requirements. <br /> <br />City Engineer Olson replied that there would have to be covenants in the development <br />agreement that would allow the City to enforce the no parking. <br /> <br />Director of Public Works/Fire Chief Kapler noted that he would be comfortable with 24~ <br />foot width streets if there is no parking. <br /> <br />Councilmember Anderson inquired if it would be safer if the roads were 32 feet wide. <br /> <br />Director of Public Works/Fire Chief Kapler replied yes. <br /> <br />Motion by Councilmember Kurak, seconded by Mayor Gamec, to ratify the <br />recommendation of the Public Works Committee and to change the maximum length of a <br />private street with a cul-de-sac from 300 feet to 600 feet. <br /> <br />City Council/March 12, 2002 <br /> Page 19 of 23 <br /> <br /> <br />
