The boardwalk section will cover all but the lid, thereby removing the concrete top section and
cast iron structure from view, and at the same time provide year-round access for inspection and
mai ntenance.

Assistant Public Works Director Olson explained the total length of this new amenity and
maintenance structure will be approximately 277 feet plus a 16 by 16 foot deck with seating. The
funding would be provided by the $9,000 April 27, 2004 Council allocation, and less than $7,500
from the sanitary sewer utility. The change in the design makes sense and would make the
observation deck accessible and provide more functionality for the sanitary sewer system.

Councilmember Elvig inquired about the proposed funding, as this project originally came
through as a park improvement with :park funds. Assistant Public Works Director Olson replied
staff felt it would be a benefit to share the funds due to the use of the manhole.

Motion by Councilmember Elvig, seconded by Councilmember Olson, to authorize staff to
purchase an additional $7,500 of materials with the use of the sanitary sewer fund and support
the modification to the originally approved pier.

Motion carried.
