2001 Comprehensive Plan
Amended February 26, 2002

2. Age Trends and Distribution
The population between the ages of 35 to 54 comprised the majority of the
population growth that occurred in the 1980s. This population group represents
residents who have stayed in the community as well as new residents, who have
moved into the community, many of which brought with them middle school and
high school aged children. Although the age group 0 to 5 has decreased in
numbers since 1980, Ramsey continues to be one of the younger communities in
the area. In Ramsey, less than 2% of the population was 65 or older in 1990 and
the median age was 28.2 compared to 5.6% of Anoka County residents who were
seniors and the median age of Anoka County, which was 29.9 in 1990. The
median age for the state of Minnesota in 1990 was 32.5. It is important to
recognize that as the baby boom era (those born in the late 1950s and early
1960s) ages, the population cohort illustrated in Figure 7 will shift upwards to
show an increase in the 55-64 age bracket.

Figure III-7 Age Distribution

65+

55-64

35-54
~,~ 25-34

19-24

6-18

0-5

Ramsey Age Distribution

iiiil:377, ................. ,,,, ,,,, ,,,, ,,,,
12 o ..................

4p39 , ,
..........
l~3~4 .........
1640 ................

I3: 27~ .....
3,1921 .....

0 1,000 2,000 3,000 4,000 5,000

Population [[3 1980 [] 1990 ]

Source: 1990 Census

2001 Ramsey Comprehensive Plan
Amended February 26, 2002

Page III-10
