example of the winter operating forecast that staff receives twice a day for the winter months and
reviewed the plow route outline of the issues that are pertinent to the snowplowing procedures.
Mayor Gamec inquired as to when the trails within the two-mile radius of the school are plowed.
Street Supervisor Riemer explained that the trails are plowed by 8:00 a.m.
Councilmember Zimmerman inquired if the City pays for the weather forecasting service.
Street Supervisor Riemer replied yes. He explained that it costs the City about $700 a year,
which may seem like a lot, but it can save the City money by not sending out salt trucks when
they are not needed.
Street Supervisor Riemer stated that it will be important for the City to look at implementing a
policy for maintenance of trails and sidewalks. Currently there is no policy in place and with all
the new developments being required to install sidewalks it will be an issue they have to address.
Councilmember Zimmerman stated that within the Town Center the City will probably have to
remove snow and questioned where the City would place that snow.
Street Supervisor Riemer explained that for the first few years they will probably be able to store
the snow on the Town Center property, but they are looking at the possibility of using the large
holding area behind Shorewood RV for snow storage.
Assistant Director of Public Works Olson noted that the reason they would be able to use that
drainage pond is because it does not have any outlet to the Mississippi River.
Councilmember Zimmerman inquired if a drainage and utility easement allows for the City to use
the area for snow storage.
Director of Public Works/Fire Chief Kapler replied that it was his understanding that the City
owned the drainage pond, but he would verify that information.
Councilmember Zimmerman replied that if the City does not own the property the property owner
may be concerned with the additional salt.
Mayor Gamec inquired as to how they were doing with the relocation of cul-de-sac mailboxes.
Street Supervisor Riemer replied that about 97 percent of the mailboxes have been moved, but
there are still a few they are working on.
Councilmember Cook suggested that staff include then snowplowing information in the Ramsey
Resident.
Public Works Committee/November 18, 2003
