P.W CASE
UPDATE ON IMPLEMENTATION OF THE WATER STUDY
By: Brian E. Olson, Principal City Engineer
Background:

During discussions and implementation of the 2002 - 2006 Capital Improvement
Program last year, questions arose regarding the location of future City wells, water
towers, and miscellaneous water system improvements.

Bolten & Menk conducted a water system study in 1999 to help the City of Ramsey to
plan for future improvements to help ensure a continuous and fresh water supply.

Mr. Bob Brown of Bolten & Menk will be present at the meeting to answer your
questions. He will also:

give an overview of our existing system
· explain assumptions that were made to come up with the recommendations of the
study
· what has been completed since 1999, and
· where we go from this point forward.

Much has happened since 1999. The City has talked seriously about the creation of a
Towne Center area, industrial development has increased, townhouse projects are
appearing more often, and single family residential developments are being approved. All
of these things can and will have an impact to the existing utility infrastructure. Since the
projections of water supply and demand as well as requirements for storage for fire
storage are based on per capita and industrial uses, there seems to be a need to re-evaluate
the projections and update the water system study.

Recommendation:

Staff feels that there are enough Citywide changes since 1999 to warrant an update of the
water system study. We are requesting the authorization to actively pursue grant
opportunities to accomplish this task.

Committee Action:

Motion to authorize Staff to approach other agencies to discuss grant opportunities to
fund an update to the water supply study.

Reviewed by:

City Administrator
Public Works Director

PW: 03/19/02
