The hump is about 600 feet long and
raises 6 feet from the north to the south. The cost to remove the hump would be $130,000 to
$150,000 depending on the slope easements.
Councilmember Kurak inquired as to why the City would be paying for the removal of the hump
when it is a State road.
Mayor Gamec replied because the State won't do it.
Ms. Nutter stated that you can't see anyone coming over the hump when turning out of 167th
Avenue. She stated that it is a horrible situation because you can't see either direction.
Councilmember Hendriksen stated that the intersection of 167th Avenue and T.H. #47 meets
warrants for some portions of the day for signalization, but not at all times. He inquired if there
was anything in the process that would consider that there is restricted vision to the south to help
justify the light.
Principal City Engineer Olson replied no.
Councilmember Zimmerman stated that in the future there will be lights at the intersection and
inquired if the hump removal could be incorporated with that project by the State.
Principal City Engineer Olson replied that he thought it was something that could be brought to
State's attention. He noted that he has been in contact with the Hazard Elimination Program in
an attempt to receive a grant, but he has not heard back as of yet.
Public Works Committee/November 19, 2002
