Councilmember Zimmerman suggested that. they cancel the installation of the light for this year
and install the light at a different intersection in the City.
Councilmember Hendriksen inquired if the City has lights on all of the intersections along major
roadways.
City Engineer Jankowski replied that they are almost to that point.
Principal City Engineer Olson noted that there has been one instance where residents put a
petition together to stop the subdivision light fee, but in this case they are talking about priority
lights.
Councilmember Kurak inquired if traffic had increased along the road with the extension of
Alpine Drive.
Mr. Jagerson replied that traffic had decreased.
Councilmember Hendriksen inquired as to how the other neighbors feel about the light.
Mr. Jagerson replied that he had not had the opportunity to talk to them about it.
Councilmember Kurak stated that if the neighbors don't want the light and traffic has been
reduced along the road it might make more sense to place the light at a different intersection this
year and address the issue at a later time.
Councilmember Hendriksen stated that the residents should be given the opportunity to state
whether or not they want the light and if they don't want the light then the City should not force
them to have one.
Councilmember Anderson inquired as to why the intersection was placed on the list.
Principal City Engineer Olson replied that the road is a 50-mph road and the concern is the speed
of vehicles approaching the intersection.
Mayor Gamec inquired if the house shied deflector would require a different type of light being
installed.
Mr. Offerman replied that he would have to see what is available. He reviewed the different light
styles.
Motion by Councilmember Hendriksen, seconded by Mayor Gamec, to recommend that the City
Council direct staff to get the consensus of the neighbors as to whether or not they want the street
light and then proceed with that consensus and if the consensus is to install the light then work
• with the property owner on a location that would be acceptable to the residents.
Public Works Committee/November 19, 2002
