Figure 5. Vehicle -mounted GPR used for site evaluation <br />2.2.5 Nuclear density gauge testing <br />A nuclear gauge was used to assess the density of pavements on site. Backscatter testing was applied in <br />accordance with ASTM D2950 to quickly assess both properties. Initially, nuclear gauge testing was <br />conducted in six municipalities at 37 separate locations to compare asphalt densities. Of these 37 <br />locations, mix data was available for 29 locations assessed. Extensive nuclear gauge testing was later <br />conducted in these six municipalities to be coupled with the results of GPR testing. More details on <br />these locations are included in the Chapter 3 analysis of test results. <br />2.3 LABORATORY WORK CONDUCTED <br />The research team conducted extensive laboratory testing to understand the behavior of chip sealed <br />pavements. The laboratory testing relied upon the collection of a minimum of 12 cores from each of the <br />locations; an example of a collected core is shown in Figure 6. <br />12 <br />
