Absent: None.

COMMISSION BUSINESS

Case#2: Consider Naming the Drive into Elmcrest Park in Honor of Youth
Volunteers

Civil Engineer II Linton indicated the City received a request to name the access road from
0uicksilvcr Street into the park, Casey Parkway to honor Bill and Kelley Casey for their many
y~ars o f' service to youth through Ramsey Youth Athletic Association and other organizations.

Commissioner Shryock stated her only concern with dedicating this for certain people is that they
am fairly new to volunteering in Ramsey and there are others that have been involved longer.
She lhought to pick them because a smaller segment of people suggested this is unfair and they
should try to get nominations for volunteers because this does not come up very often. She
indicated they needed to make this fair.

Commissioner Lehman wondered if this has come up before in the City.

Parks/Utilities Supervisor Riverblood stated there had been a few instances that were similar; one
was Alpine Drive and the other was the south part of Riversbend Park. He stated in the end, the
Commission thought the parks should be named after natural resources or the subdivisions that
contained them. He thought this issue may be best approached from a policy stand point first.

Commissioner Ostrum stated he was opposed to naming this after anyone. He thought the
Cascy's did have some recognition at the Happy Days event and he did not think a road needed to
[)e il[tilled after them.

Chairperson Johns thought the point was appropriate to do something to recognize volunteers in
thc parks but streets were pretty touchy.

Commissioner Shryock thought they could put up a plaque in recognition.

Commissioner LaMere thought the City should set a standard regarding volunteers.

Commission directed staff to research this item for possible volunteer recognition.

Park and Recreation Commission/March 10, 2005
Page 2 of ! 1
