that he would not see those as a problem. Councilmember Hendriksen stated that he would like
to see driveway marker reflectors excluded from the policy. Councilmember Anderson inquired
if there was anything that could be attached to the lathe that would serve the same purpose.
Public Works Supervisor Reimer replied that staff is not trying to remove reflectors, but are more
concerned about heavy metal posts. Director of Public Works Kapler noted that a reflective tape
could be used on top of the wooden lathes.

Motion carried. Voting Yes: Mayor Gamec, Councilmcmbers Anderson, Hendriksen, and
Zimmerman. Voting No: None.

Case #3: Winter Trail Maintenance

Public Works Supervisor Riemer stated that in the past several years, the Public Works
Department has received requests to clear parts of the City's trail system to allow for winter use.
A map was presented to the Committee indicating the trails that staff feel would provide service
to the greatest number of residents. Last year staff received direction from the Committee on this
matter and would like to revisit this issue for any changes in last year's recommendation. The
trails would receive low priority in the overall snow removal program. Streets and municipal
parking lots would receive first priority, followed by skating rinks, and then trails. Trails would
not receive attention until one to two days following the storm, depending on the amount of
clean-up required on the streets. The time frame coincides with surrounding communities.

Mayor Gamec stated that he felt that the policy should be changed within reason. He stated that
more and more people are using the trails. He suggested having the Park Commission review the
issue and indicate which trails would be a higher priority.

Councilmember Anderson inquired as to what is currently used to plow trails.

Public Works Supervisor Reimer explained that currently staff uses a bobcat with a snowplow
attached. He also noted that staff has looked into purchasing a sidewalk machine.

Mayor Gamec stated that the Sunwood Drive sidewalks should be a priority as well as any MSA
streets and along T.H. #47.

Councilmember Zimmerman inquired if residents live along sidewalks are expected to remove
the snow.

Public Works Supervisor Reimer replied that the current policy does not require property owners
to remove the snow from the sidewalks.

Councilmember Zimmerman stated that maybe they should consider such a policy.

Councilmember Hendriksen inquired as to how expensive a sidewalk machine is.

Public Works Supervisor Reimer replied $65,000.

Public Works Committee/April 17, 2001
