Mayor Gamec replied that if the City would want to buy the station and operate they could, but
most cities have opted not to be the owner and operator of the station.

Councilmember Zimmerman stated that it was his understanding that the MN Highway
Department would be the agency that would carry the condemnation and ownership of the
property, but there must be some policy drafted as to who will pay for what.

Mayor Gamec replied that he would find that information out.

Councilmember Hendriksen inquired if there was a station operating profitably anywhere.

Mayor Gamec replied no.

Councilmember Hendriksen stated that he does not see Burlington Northern running a station at a
lost, so where would the money come from to keep the station running.

Mayor Gamec replied that he was not sure.

Councilmember Hendriksen stated that he is concerned that if a station is constructed the City of
Ramsey may be considered a benefited party and be assessed the cost. If there is a document that
states that the City of Ramsey will never be required to operate and maintain the station he would
like to read it, because it would put most of his concerns at rest.

ADJOURNMENT

Motion by Mayor Gamec, seconded by Councilmember Hendriksen, to adjourn the meeting.

Motion carried. Voting Yes: Mayor Gamec, Councilmembers Hendriksen, Anderson, and
Zimmerman. Voting No: None.

The regular meeting of the Public Works Committee adjourned at 7:05 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Recording Secretary
TimeSaver Off Site Secretarial, Inc.

Dean Kapler ~
Director of Public Works/Fire Chief

Public Works Committee/April 17, 2001
