Public Works Supervisor Reimer stated that trucks are a little harder to rent, and they are set up
with special equipment that is going to cost more for somebody to set up a truck like that. He
stated if they are going to buy, it will be a truck. He stated another problem they are running into
is sidewalk maintenance, and they could barely keep up last year, and there's nothing but Town
Center open, and they don't have a sidewalk ordinance saying who is going to plow that, so if that
ever came about, they wouldn't be able to keep up. Right now what they mainly do is the two
mile area for walking, and then it branches out after that, and it takes a couple of days.

Chairperson Elvig asked if there were some sidewalks they should be redoing. He stated they put
a new ordinance together for the standard size, standard grade.

Public Works Supervisor Reimer stated those are ten feet.

Chairperson Elvig stated they were talking about sidewalks and trails, weren't they.

Public Works Supervisor Reimer stated that they were normally five feet.

Assistant Director of Public Works Olson stated the sidewalks are five feet, and the trails are ten
feet. Concerning redoing them, he stated that there is currently $5,000 in the budget per year that
they are prioritizing, and that's not a great deal of money. He explained they are prioritizing
overlays and where they see maintenance need. He stated that they haven't necessarily earmarked
a certain dollar amount for correcting some of the potential deficiencies.

Assistant Director of Public Works Olson asked if that was for sidewalks and trails or both. He
asked if staff could speak to the sidewalk ordinance.

Public Works Supervisor Reimer stated that right now they don't have anything. He stated if you
go into the Ponds, it has a lot of sidewalks. He stated they don't have that language in either
form right now, so it's kind of hanging out there.

Councilmember Olson stated that more and more of the neighborhoods are going to be urban
sidewalks.

Public Works Supervisor Reimer stated they are required to have sidewalks on one side of the
road, but there is no maintenance agreement on what they are going to do.

Councilmember Olson stated they should put that on a work session and talk about that.

Chairperson Elvig agreed. He asked what his thoughts were on equipment.

Public Works Supervisor Reimer stated they were going to propose in the next budget another
sidewalk machine that would be trackless.

Assistant Director of Public Works Olson asked how wide are they.

Public Works Committee / April 19, 2005
