The objective of the study was to provide an
evaluation tool to identify strategies for enhancing existing community parks and natural
resource systems, existing cultural or historical assets within the parks, identification of
greenway linkage systems throughout the community.
-- This study involved the installation of a series of ecological test plots within the parks to
_ evaluate a variety of options for addressing the deteriorating conditions present. The data
collected from these plots were combined with historical information found
t;' ' . °> -; in records,maps,vegetation data,historical accounts,and GIS and GPS
Ai mapping. The data were used to develop an understanding of how the
ecological systems functioned when healthy, and how they have declined to
their current conditions. Based on our fmdings,AES developed a
MINN
comprehensive Natural Resources Stewardship Program(NRSP), including
detailed specifications for ecological restoration and management activities.
In 2003,AES conducted vegetation surveys in the test plots which were established in
1995. AES statistically analyzed the data and identified many positive trends regarding
restoration and management activities in the City's parks. However, areas were also
identified where it was apparent that modifying the City's management practices would
be beneficial to achieve program objectives. AES prepared the City of Minnetonka
Stewardship Program 1997-2003 Assessment and Recommendations report and a
reference binder containing all NRSP documents to assist City staff and their
consultants/contractors in program implementation. In addition,AES prepared a
PowerPoint presentation for the City of the NRSP for public education.
McCombs Frank Roos Team 4-7 City of Ramsey
