Description of Trail Types

Trail t?,,pes in Ramsey can be divided into three categories: Off-
l~.o:td, ()n Road and On Road-Separated. These are the
three: descriptions that generally describe the association of trails with
st t;(:(:ts or their alignment in relationship to them.

Off-road: 'Fypcs include paved surfaces for non-motorized use, and
p:tved or non-paved sur[;qces for pedestrians. ,All of these trail types are
removed [~om roadways.

(;recnway-type trails are off-street trails such as the Lake Itasca
Trail. These trails are typically located in a greemvay or natural area,
designated trail corridor or within a park. This type of trail provides
users xvith a high quality recreational experience because of the
t]a~u ral cnvh:onment, the lack of interruptions and because they are
off cn separated from vehicle traffic. Greenway-type trails are usually
pa,,cd with an asphalt, or they can be built from compacted gravel
t~xarerials. Paved trails may be used by all wheeled trailed users and
pedestrians. Compacted gravel trails can be used by bicyclists and
pedestrians, but are sometmaes problematic for other wheeled uses.

Typical Suctions of Greenxvay Trail Types are located in Section
5, design Guides:
-,~'eparated Bike ~o~d Pedes/rian Trail in an Q[f-Road ~etting -
[qgm:e 6.5
-3't~ared Use Trail in a, Off:Road Setting- Figure 6.7

On-road: These trails are essentially paved shoulders on roadways. A
vist;al separation should be created by using a different aggregate in
the pavement mix or a stamped pattern on the shoulder in addition to
,~tripin!5 and rumble strips. This may be the most cost-efficient way to
pro:,idc Ira/is, but typically provides the lowest quality trail experience.
Bet:ausc. the trail is usually vet',/close to vehicular traffic, the trail may
lm tms~timble for certain users~

Typical Sections of the above trail types are located in
Section 5, Design Guides.
