Reasons for Acquiring Land

Tl~c obvious reason for
accluiring land is to extend
· ~ trails, butwhygo through the
u:()ublc? [.and acquisition is essential
t(~ create a balanced trail system that
i,,; ~).ot routed en6rely along roads or
dead-ended into neighborhoods that
arc adjao:nl to land that has not yet
been developed. Purchasing different
types :~f landscapes also adds to the
va tic ty o ( in tcrcst points along a trail.

l,and acquisition must be prioritized
acco~:ding t~ what the land has~
where it is, and how it relates to
losr~ rat~/~,e p/ans.

Prioritizing Land Acquisition
· Land that has significant ecological value would offer an extraordinary
experience for trail users. Trail construction is a method of "tying up"
land and protecting it for its highest and best use. Trott Brook in 1L'u-nsey
is one such example.

· Land that is located bet~veen two trail destinations could create a trail
connection. This allows for uninterrupted travel on the trail and'easier trail
maintenance.

· Land that may be available for purchase now or in the future should
already be considered in the long range plan. As the lives of people change,
an opportunit3: may ,arise. Land not previously available may suddenly be
for sale. The Cit3~ must be ready for such occurrences and the landoxvners
in areas where trails are planned must be aware of the City's interest. In
addition, £mancial reserves should be available to acquire these lands
should circumstances alloxv.

In Moose Lake, the Ci(y worked with the Minnesota Department ofNatura/ Resources
and community governing bodies to o'eate a trail along the original road into the City of
Moose Lake. Private dtiEens donated acreage for the new trail to preserve the area3
ecological vah/e of the/and and the community's histoo:
