Figure VI.2 <br /> <br />Shared Pedestrian and Bicycle Trail Abutting a Rural Road <br /> <br />If the trail cannot be separated from the roadway, a trail abutting the roadway <br />may be considered. This trail may consist of a wide shoulder that is signed <br />properly and designated as a trail route. AASHTO standards should be consulted <br />as a standard of care to see if traffic counts and shoulder widths are such that <br />safe trail operation can occur. <br /> <br />In some cases, shoulders can be widened and rumble strips or reflective strips <br />can be added betxveen the drive lane and the trail for added safety. This is a <br />low cost alternative for trail construction if all other alternatives have been <br />exhausted or are simply not financially or physically possible. <br /> <br /> <br />
