Councihnember Anderson inquired as to what impact the cuts would have on the truancy <br />program. <br /> <br />Sergeant Way replied that unfortunately it would have to fall by the wayside. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec inquired if the DARE program was cut for budget reasons. <br /> <br />Sergeant Way replied that that was his understanding. <br /> <br />Councilmember Zimmerman stated that the County came out with a statement that they would be <br />operating under a tight budget and to not look for any increases in personnel. They made it very <br />clear that if anyone retires or quits they will not be replaced for some time. He stated that it will <br />be a very difficult year at the County, because they got hit with the problems the State <br />Legislature sent down. He stated that the City would have to look at some drastic cuts as well, <br />because they can't increase taxes by 30 percent. <br /> <br />Sergeant Way reviewed the Police requests for 2002, which included the purchase of three new <br />squad cars. <br /> <br />Councilmember Kurak inquired as to how long a Police Car is used. <br /> <br />Sergeant Way replied that the cars are used on the street for 2.5 years and then investigation uses <br />them. <br /> <br />City Administrator Norman stated that City or Ramsey goes through the "hand me down" <br />rotation, which means that after the Police Department is done using them then they are typically <br />used by the building inspector, administration and parks department. <br /> <br />Councilmember Kurak inquired if the proposed full-time mechanic would be able to do the <br />maintenance work on the Police cars. <br /> <br />Sergeant Way replied that the mechanic would be able to do some of the general work. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec inquired if the mechanic would be able to handle the entire fleet. <br /> <br />Director of Public Works/Fire Chief Kapler stated that the mechanic position part time is <br />currently able to keep up with the Public Works equipment, but was unable to handle the fire <br />equipment. If the position is turned into full-time, the mechanic would be able to take on more <br />work, but it is not feasible for the mechanic to do all the work on the vehicles. The mechanic <br />would be able to handle brake work and minor maintenance issues. <br /> <br />Councilmember Anderson inquired if the Police Department was proposing to cancel National <br />Night Out or is it proposed to be funded differently. <br /> <br />City Council/August ~, 2001 <br /> Page 2 of 7 <br /> <br /> <br />
