Absent: Ostrum.

COMMISSION BUSINESS

Case #1: Explore Options for a Dog Park

Civil Engineer 17 Linton explained staff has received requests for a dog park from time to time.
Dog exercise areas seem to be popular. Three Rivers, Park District, formerly Ffermepin Parks, has
established four dog-off leash areas. They require an annual pass or purchase of a daily pass for
use. Their sites are typically large, natural areas fenced offlkom the adjacent parks.

There are a number of opportunities available for exercising dogs in a natural setting; several of
the natural areas include watef features for swimming. The number of urban parks is limited.
One ?ption to consider would be an area enclosed with a decorative wrought iron fence in an
urban park setting. 'This'Style of.park is popular in'areas such as Boston and New York.

Staff recommends the commissioners solicit the' oPinion of friends and acquaintances before
making a decision on a dog park in Ramsey. Local support is critical to the success of any
recreational venture.

Civil Engineer II Linton thought they may be able to have one in the Town Center.

Commissioner Lehman did not know if he would recommend having a dog park within Town
Center but he thought it was a good idea because of the density that is coming in to the City.

Commissioner Shryock thought they have some of the small-natural areas within one of the
Town Center parks; they may be able to put a dog park in there.

Chairperson Jotms knew having water in a dog park is a hug~ benefit.

Civil Engineer H Linton stated having bags for waste and water is a huge benefit.

Commissioner Letunan wondered if they should check at the game fair about what. they could
have at the park.

Chairperson Johns thought that may be a little different because those are hunting dogs.

Parks Utilities Supervisor Riverblood thought there were two types of' dog parks. One is a
hunting park with water and another is for pet owners to allow the pet to get exercise without
worry about the dog getting away and hit by a car or hurt someone. His recommendation would
be to continue to explore this and find out What type they would want and if they want a
permanent or temporary park.

Chairperson Johns thought they could put a survey at the Kennel or vets for feedback.

Park and Recreation Commission/July 14, 2005.
