28
3:45 to 4:00 p.m.
4:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Track B: How to Do It
Dobbs, Principal, Hay Dobbs P.A. Architecture, Urban Design, Planning, Interiors
This session will provide an overview of the Southwest Transitway LRT system, the
approach to station area planning and the schedule for Implementation. Hay Dobbs is
providing a unique and proven approach by addressing the LRT line not as a series of
individual stations, but rather as a fixed united linear transportation system. This
understanding of how new connections from the SW Metro to both downtowns, the State
Capitol, the Mall of America and the Airport creates a value added approach to station
area planning. This will create a synergy that should significantly catalyze development
along the line. Unique features, challenges and opportunities of the 12 stations and 4
communities currently involved in the process will also be shared.
Break
Track C: Case Studies
Session Three
Track A: What Are You Thinking?
Market Analysis for Cities — Joel West, Senior Planner, Yaggy Colby Associates
In today's economic environment it is critical that cities and other local jurisdictions know
and understand how their industries and commerce fit within the broader economy. By
more fully understanding the dynamic of their local economy, economic development
professionals are better able to devise more effective strategies to encourage economic
development in their communities.
Putting Together a Good Survey — Scott Chazdon, Research and Evaluation
Coordinator, University of Minnesota Extension; Liz Templin
Without a well designed survey communities will neither attain good data nor benefit from
business input. Without good data and a strong response, the credibility and usability of
the information suffers. The workshop will guide economic developers in:
1. Deciding what information is needed from a survey
2. Identify how to select the businesses to survey
3. Overview time, cost and response rates from different delivery methods
4. Learn the elements of good survey questions (strengths and weaknesses of different
types of questions, how to write clear questions, question order)
5. Techniques for getting a high response rate
Preserving the Past and Building the Future...One Brick at a Time — Heidi Timm -
Bijold, Business Developer, City of Duluth
The former Clyde Iron Works site, established in 1898 as a foundry and machining
company, was an abandoned, blighted ten -acre site along the 1 -35 corridor when
purchased in 2003 by Alessandro Giuliani. Giuliani actively explored development options
that could meet a community need, incorporate historic preservation, and be
economically viable. The result is a sports center housing a year -round hockey arena and
a multi -sport pavilion that flank the preserved "Heritage Hall." Construction of a hotel and
the adaptive reuse of two historic structures — into a marketplace and a sports training
facility — are underway.
5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Medalist reception and networking event
